B-25G: Introduced a 75 mm M4 cannon in the nose for anti-shipping, ground attack roles, and additional forward-firing machine guns.
B-25H: Enhanced firepower with a lighter 75 mm cannon, up to 14 forward-facing .50-caliber machine guns, and a redesigned tail gunner position.
B-25J: The most widely produced variant, optimized for bombing and ground-attack missions. It featured a transparent nose for bombardiers or a solid nose packed with machine guns for strafing roles.
Operational History
The B-25 saw extensive service in every theater of World War II, proving its adaptability and effectiveness in diverse combat environments.
Pacific Theater:
The B-25 excelled in the Pacific Theater, where it was used extensively for island-hopping campaigns, maritime interdiction, and ground attacks:
Doolittle Raid (April 18, 1942): Sixteen B-25Bs, launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, conducted the first air raid on Tokyo and other Japanese cities. Although the raid caused limited physical damage, its psychological impact was immense, boosting American morale and demonstrating Japan's vulnerability.
New Guinea and Solomon Islands Campaigns: B-25s equipped for strafing and skip-bombing were highly effective against Japanese shipping and troop concentrations. They disrupted supply lines and provided close air support for advancing Allied forces.
Battle of the Bismarck Sea (March 1943): B-25s played a key role in sinking a significant portion of a Japanese convoy, demonstrating the aircraft's effectiveness in anti-shipping missions.
